South Eastern Hound Club 2018 Critique

Firstly may I say thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge this lovely show and to my steward for the day for a great job. It was a super day with a lovely entry.

Puppy (1,1)

Junior (5,2)

1st: Faircloth’s Beardswood Uther. A well balanced young male, just 12 months. Dark, harsh coated and with good bone throughout. Lovely typical head with a nice dark eye. Strong neck leading into well laid shoulder and good return of upper arm. Good depth of chest, nice topline and strong loin. Well muscled quarters for his age, good bed of stifle and good length from hip to hock. Movement was sound, easy and true with good reach and drive.

2nd Finnett & Heathcote’s Hyndsight Endlessflight. Another well made young male, also just 12 months. Strong bone throughout. Lovely head and expression. Good length in profile. Not quite the depth of chest of 1st at present. Excellent, strong quarters with good width and lovely low hocks. Less settled on the move but when he went well, movement was true and strong.

3rd Tan & Helps’ Beardswood Uliana

Novice (6,2)

1st Finnett & Heathcote’s Restless Spirit. Very appealing, shapely 12 month old bitch with a good head and sweet expression. Strong bone. Well balanced in profile with good length and curves in all the right places. Good shoulder placement with nice return of upper arm. Ribs well set back and good spring of rib. Strong quarters with nice fallaway, good bend of stifle and low hocks. Well muscled with good second thigh for her age. Lovely harsh, dark coat. Movement was a little unsettled but strode out well when she did settle with a strong and easy stride

2nd Woolf’s Greyflax Perfect Day. Paler coated 4yr old bitch with a lovely, typical head, and a soft, faraway expression. Strong neck leading into adequate shoulder placement. Depth of chest ok, good spring of rib. Nice length and curvy in profile. Strong loin and a good fallaway. Good width behind and low hocks but muscle tone a little soft. Movement was a little sluggish but held topline on the move.

3rd Faircloth’s Chuilinn Lyriel at Calbraidh

Graduate (5,2)

1st Finnett & Heathcote’s Hyndsight Westeros. A large, strong boned powerful male with a harsh, dark coat. Nice male head with dark eye. In profile, covers the ground well when standing. Strong neck leading into well laid shoulder and good return of upper arm. Chest deep but would prefer a little less width in front. Rib cage set well back and good spring of rib giving plenty of room. Well muscled loin leading into strong quarters, low hocks, good bend of stifle and second thigh. Excellent muscle tone throughout. Movement strong and powerful

2nd Towle’s Packway Grey Gables. Very different type from 1st. Pale coated young bitch somewhat light in bone. Nice feminine head and dark eye. Nice length and proportion when in profile but rather raw and lacking in muscle. Rather nervous and unsettled to begin with but once settled, she won her place on her movement which was light, easy and true once she got into her stride.

3rd Taylor’s Saint Valentene Lilly

Open Dog (6,2)

1st Girling’s Pyefleet Tarka. Mature, very male dog standing proud and alert in profile. Lovely male head with good expression. Strong neck leading into well laid shoulder and good return of upper arm. Strong bone throughout. Excellent deep chest and a strong loin leading into lovely fallaway. Good width in rear with low hocks and great length from hip to hock. Excellent muscle tone througout. A strong workmanlike male. Movement was enthusiastic and powerful with excellent reach and drive. Won class and BoB on his lovely movement. BoB

2nd Finnett & Heathcote’s Hyndsight Pilgrim. Younger, dark-coated dog, still a little raw. Lovely male head with dark eye. Plenty of good bone, very shapely. Lovely deep chest, well laid shoulders. Strong loin, good bend of stifle and low hocks. Well muscled throughout with excellent muscle tone, especially on quarters. Was a little unsettled today both standing and on the move.

3rd Baumann’s Loxley Norton

Open Bitch (5,3)

1st Finnett & Heathcote’s Careless Whisper. Beautiful, dark coated, well balanced, shapely young bitch with a lovely feminine head, soft expression, dark eye and neat ears. Excellent shoulder placement, good return of upper arm and good bone throughout. Stood covering the ground well in profile with a lovely length and topline which she held on the move when settled. Good depth of chest. Excellent quarters, good width across the rear, with good bend of stifle and low hocks. Muscle tone good all through and strong second thigh for her age. Movement was lively but true and strong when she settled down. Clearly enjoyed herself in the ring! Still a little raw with some maturing to do but one to watch. RBoB

2nd Woolf’s Greyflax Oopsie Daisy. Very different type to 1st. Mature bitch with a lovely feminine head and kind eye. Nice length in profile with a strong loin and low hocks. A little upright in the shoulder. Coat pale and rather soft. Muscle tone a little weak and was rather reluctant on the move.
